CENTRAL OHIO APA NEWS AND EVENTS

CENTRAL OHIO NATIONAL TEAMS

5 8-Ball teams and 1 9-Ball team won our City Regional Tournament in June and headed toward Las Vegas in August to compete with teams from the United States and Canada. The 5 8-Ball teams who competed were Cornfed Ball Breakers, Sidewinders, and Traci's Tri-Cup Wannabees from Columbus, Gravediggers from Logan, and the Sharks from Lancaster. The 9-ball team who competed was Crown's 9 Ball team out of Gahanna.

Team standings at the National Tournament:

In 8-ball out of 596 teams, Sidewinders and the Gravediggers placed 257th, Cornfed Ball Breakers and Sharks placed 129th, Traci's Tri-Cup Wannabees placed 9th (Way to go!!!, this is the furthest a team has gone since we have taken over!)

In 9-ball out of 222 teams, Crown's 9 Ball placed 49th.

We would like to thank all of these teams for representing Columbus, OH!!!

QUALIFICATIONS TO THE CITY TOURNAMENT:

8-BALL

We need to explain the process of tri-cups and the city tournament. Three tri-cup tournaments are held each year after the end of a given session. 64 teams are invited to each Tri-cup. Teams that automatically go to the Tri-Cup are the winners of each division and the winners of the playoffs of each division. So if there are 20 divisions, 40 teams will automatically qualify for the tri-cup. Then a Wild Card Draw is done from all of the other teams that played during the session unless they owe money to the APA or have had 5 forfeits. Of all the teams that are left, 24 then are drawn to complete the board for the Tri-cup tournament.

The summer session begins the year for play in the APA. When a team makes it to the summer tri-cup and qualifies at that time for the City held in June, then the team MUST play fall and spring sessions with 4 original players (who were on the roster when the team qualified at the tri-cup in the summer). If the team doesn't come back for the fall session, then the team loses its qualification to the City. If you decide to bring your team back in the spring, your team will need to win the division, win the playoffs, or get a wild card draw to re-qualify the team at the Spring Tri-cup to get to the City Tournament.

A maximum of 64 teams from the three Tri-cups are then invited to the City Regional Tournament held in June after the spring Tri-cup. There are usually less than 64 teams because of teams losing their qualification or qualifying at more than one Tri-cup. 16 teams from the summer session qualify and 24 teams from the fall and spring session qualify. Currently, 5 winners from the City Tournament will then go to Las Vegas to compete nationally in August.

9-Ball

Because there aren't as many teams in 9-ball as there are in 8 ball, tri-cup tournaments are not held after each session. The national APA requires that an area has a minimum of 14 9-ball teams playing in the spring session in order to send a team to Las Vegas for the national tournaments. 9-ball has 3 sessions a year just like 8-ball. The winner of each division and the winner of the playoffs for each session are invited to the 9-ball City Regional tournament. So if there is only one division all year, the maximum number of teams invited to the City tournament would be 6. One of these 6 teams would be sent on to Las Vegas in August. The chances in getting to Las Vegas in 9-ball are much better than 8-Ball. However, if we don't have a minimum of 14 teams playing in the spring session, there will not be any teams going to Vegas at all to represent Central Ohio.

Hopefully, this answers a lot of questions that players have on our tournaments.

MICHELOB-AMBERBOCK SPONSORSHIP

By now, I am sure almost everyone knows we are sponsored by Michelob-Amberbock. We feel this is a great addition to what already is the Biggest and Best Amateur Pool League in the World.

We will be doing all we can to support our sponsor and to use their products at all of our tournaments.

We have 6 Distributing Companies in our area and have met with 5 out of the 6. All but one of the 5 have agreed that it is a good relationship and will be doing what they can to promote the APA Pool League. Even though we didn't have as much time to promote this relationship in the fall session as we wanted to, we are making some positive progress.

We would like to single out some great efforts:

Rich Hilliard and Columbus Distributing. Especially Angie Beckett in the print shop (she has printed beautiful flyers for the APA) and Jason Slack for his effort in promoting the APA.

Wes Raynor and Matesich Distributing. Thanks to Scott Richards, Norm Guthridge, and Kent Burkhart for their efforts in the APA promotion.

Rob Kuhn and John McGee with Classic Brands. It appears their efforts will result in an entirely new division starting soon.

As this relationship grows, look for more and better things through the APA Pool League!

SUMMER MVP TOURNAMENT:

The summer MVP tournament will be held at the Golden 8 Ball on October 4. Letters of invitation were sent out today (Sept. 17). This tournament is limited to the first 64 people respond with their $10.00 entry fee. If you feel you may have been in the top 10 for your division and have not received a letter by Friday, September 19, you need to call the office. The invitation could have gotten lost in the mail or we may not have a correct address on you.

PRIZE FUND

Prize fund checks have been mailed to all captains. Net payout to teams was $15,774.00. Players, please contact your captains if you have not received your share of the prize fund money.

SUMMER TRI-CUP:

The tri-cup results from the summer will be posted in the next newsletter.

FALL SESSION:

We are in our 3rd or 4th week for most divisions. We have added a new division. This division is in Nelsonville. These teams started their 1st week Tuesday, September 16. They will be joining us for the fall tri-cup tournament.

We have several byes to fill. If you know of a group of people who would like to shoot pool, get them started on a team to fill the bye.

Rosters will be closed after the 4th week of play. Players who have not played and have not paid their membership money will be removed from the roster. ALL players (even new players) need 6 plays in this session to advance to any tournaments. These 6 plays most be played before the playoffs.

CORPORATE LEAGUES:

We have some corporate leagues playing in our league now, but we are very interested in having more. If you work for a company that endorses employee activities such as softball or golf, your company would also endorse pool leagues. Call our office if you feel your company would endorse billiards as an event so we can contact the key employee to begin a league.

LADIES LEAGUES:

We have not had much success in developing ladies’ teams as we should. In order to participate in the National Tournaments in Vegas, we need to have 6 ladies’ teams participating in the Spring Session. What an opportunity for a chance to go to Vegas and play!! With 6 teams playing, you would have a 1 in 6 chance of going to Vegas. What better odds could there be? We can start leagues anywhere in the central Ohio area. LADIES, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Call now for details to get started in the Spring Session!

PERSONAL NOTES:

Terry Vaughn Callahan got married before his team, the Sidewinders, went to Vegas for the Nationals. He spent his honeymoon shooting pool.

Ray Wilcox and Tanya McComas got married and spent their honeymoon at the Tri-Cup last weekend.

We would like to offer our condolences to the families of Cindy Freeman and Mike Manley. Many other players have had family members and close friends pass away this summer. We also have several players who are battling cancer. Please keep all in your thoughts and prayers.

As a side note, Carla became a grandmother for the 2nd time on August 14. Hannah was born a month early, but weighed 5 lb. 4 oz and is growing like a weed!!

Please e-mail us if you have any information you would like to add to the newsletter.
